Trunk road 4 between Oulu and Kemi improvements

Project Description

Highway 4 is also part of the E75, which is a European main international traffic artery. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (formerly the Finnish Transport Agency) began a road improvement project on the highway in 2017. The project includes a 122 km stretch between Oulu and Kemi. Trunk road 4 is the most important road connection from the south to Lapland and part of the Bothnian Arc. Traffic volumes between Oulu and Kemi have increased considerably. The share of heavy traffic is large and the road is an important transportation route. The traffic occasionally becomes congested, and the share of longdistance traffic is large. The development of mining and tourism in Lapland underlines the importance of this road section.
