LKAB Iron Mine Expansion Project

On 28 October 2008, LKAB approved the decision to construct the new 1,365m haulage main level at the mine. The new main level will deepen the mine by 320m. A new haulage level will be constructed at 1,365m depth for shuttle-train traffic. The main level will be built at an investment of around $1.7bn.The new level is expected to be completed by early 2017. Based on a yearly production of approximately 19Mt of finished products, the operating life of the Kiruna mine will be increased by more than 20 years to 2030.
