Kiruna city relocation project
Project Description
Swedish state-owned miner Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) "aims to relocate much of the town three kilometres to the east. The company will construct some new buildings from scratch to develop a new, modern city centre for Kiruna, and disassemble and relocate other buildings of historical significance, as part of a vast urban relocation project that will cost over a billion dollars". The move will take place in phases, and the first one has already begun. LKAB, which is building the new City Hall, broke ground in September 2014, and construction began a year later. Current projects include City Center additions of hotels, cultural centers, retail premises, and housing. Relocation is set to be completed in 2035.
